A new exhibit by artist Dick Termes opens at Wessington Springs June 30th at the Community Room in the Courthouse during regular business hours. The exhibition featuring 20 Termespheres® will be on display through August 7th, 10:00-4:00. Dick will be at the display from 12:00-4:00 that day.
Simply put, Termes paints on spheres, but his art is far from simple. His spherical works hang from the ceiling and are known as Termespheres®. As you would expect, it’s not easy to transition from a flat canvas to a round one but Termes makes it look easy. To complete this effect, he has developed a process known as “6 Point Perspective” to create revolving, three-dimensional worlds that spin right before your eyes.
This artwork is unlike anything you’ll see in other galleries. It challenges the observer to immerse themselves in interpretations of worlds only Dick Termes could conjure. They hang and rotate. His artistic style varies greatly from optical illusions, famous architectural interiors, surreal worlds, geometric, spherical landscapes and transparent pieces where you see two versions of a reality on both the inside and the outside of the sphere.
Dick Termes is an internationally acclaimed artist whose work hangs in museums, galleries, corporate headquarters, and private collections throughout the globe.Termespheres are in permanent collections all over the world—from the Glasgow Science Centre and the Science Centre Singapore, to the Department of Mathematical Sciences at West Point Military Academy and Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut.
Termes’ work has been published in many books, most notably:
Termes’s piece titled ‘The Big Bang’ was featured on the cover of France’s publication UneBelle Histoire du Temps which translates as A Brief History of Time, by Stephen Hawking.
He is also featured in the book Masters of Deception which features Termes’ work along with M.C. Escher, Salvador Dali and many others.
He has presented art and math seminars and lectures not only across the country, but all over the world. He was the keynote speaker for the California Art Teachers Association where he talked about his theories on perspective.
There is something for everyone at this show - those interested in the visually stunning, those who want to delve deeper into the integral geometry that pulls the visuals tightly together, those who are fascinated with optical illusions or those just wanting to visit famous cathedrals on the other side of our own Earth globe.
